Osteoarthritis Cases Surging In Younger People: Expert Explains Causes Behind It

Osteoarthritis Cases Surging In Younger People: Expert Explains Causes Behind It

Osteoarthritis has been related to older age because of the normal reduction in general bone health that occurs as people age. Because of sedentary lifestyles, this ailment is now affecting a larger proportion of the younger population.

"Osteoarthritis is an ailment that causes the bones to degenerate, and can significantly impact a person's quality of life. It gradually weakens joint health, resulting in mobility challenges and severe pain," said Dr Ashish Arbat, Orthopedic & Joint Replacement Surgeon, Jehangir Multispeciality Hospitals, Pune.

"Typically linked to old age due to declining bone health, osteoarthritis has recently become more prevalent among younger individuals. Osteoarthritis is now being diagnosed in many people aged 35-45, whereas previously it was predominantly found in those between 55 and 60 years old," Dr Arbat added.

Causes Of Osteoarthritis Cases Surging In Younger People

According to Dr Arbat, a sedentary lifestyle, obesity, and prolonged periods of sitting can have detrimental effects on our bone and joint health. As per him, cartilage that envelops the bones deteriorates due to excessive weight or insufficient physical activity along with an unhealthy diet.

According to World Health Organisation estimates, osteoarthritis is the fourth major cause of disability, posing a significant worldwide health and economic burden.

"Osteoarthritis is seen when the protective cartilage that cushions the ends of the bones gradually wears away. While osteoarthritis can impact any joint, it predominantly affects the hands, knees, hips, and spine," Dr Arbat said, adding, the spike in cases of osteoarthritis among young people during the pandemic can be attributed to the prevalence of work-from-home norms.

"Prolonged periods of sitting in front of screens, lack of physical activity, weight gain, unhealthy eating habits, and limited exposure to sunlight are the primary factors contributing to osteoarthritis," Dr Arbat concluded.

Factors leading to osteoarthritis in youngsters such as a lack of physical activity, prolonged periods of sitting, heavy lifting, sedentary office work, being overweight or obese, excessive running or participation in impact sports, joint injuries, birth defects such as hip dysplasia or uneven leg lengths, hormonal imbalances affecting growth, diabetes, and a family history of osteoarthritis should be immediately addressed. It is important to pay attention to signs and symptoms such as chronic joint pain, discomfort, swelling, redness around joints, and mobility issues.

Tips To Prevent Osteoarthritis In Youngsters

Dr Arbat advised, "Osteoarthritis, often considered a condition of old age, is increasingly becoming a concern for younger adults due to sedentary lifestyles and obesity. The prevention of osteoarthritis in the younger population requires a multifaceted approach that incorporates both physical activity and healthy diet."

"Engaging in regular exercise that includes strength training and low-impact activities can help maintain joint health and reduce the risk of developing osteoarthritis later in life," he added.

Dr Arbat concluded, "Maintaining a healthy weight through proper nutrition is crucial for preventing excessive stress on the joints. Taking proactive measures at a young age to prioritise joint health through physical activity, diet management, and injury prevention can play a pivotal role in preventing this condition."

A&E Doctor Shares 'common Early Symptom' Of Bone Cancer To Watch Out For

Bone cancer is a rare form of the disease that begins, as the name suggests, in the bones. It can affect any bones in the body but typically grows in the long bones of the legs or upper arms.

As with any disease, the sooner you spot the signs of bone disease, the sooner you can seek the all-important treatment you need.

However, the symptoms could be easily mistaken for other health problems.

More specifically, they could be identified as a reaction to an injury or, in children, growing pains.

Therefore, if you have any concerns about potential symptoms it is always best to get them checked out by a medical professional.

Speaking to TikTok, Doctor Suraj Kukadia highlighted the most common telltale sign of bone cancer.

The NHS GP and A&E clinician, who is better known as Dr Sooj, warned his more than 59,000 followers to look out for bone pain.

If the pain is "persistent, deep and increasing" it could mean you have cancer, he explained.

He said: "I recently had a patient who was asking me about the symptoms of bone cancer.

  • "A persistent, deep and increasing pain in one of your bones is a common early symptom."

Swelling and tenderness in the area is also a warning sign.

"The part of the bone with the cancer can also become swollen and tender," Dr Sooj said.

The disease can also make the bones more likely to break.

He continued: "And because the bones can be weakened by the cancer they are more prone to getting breaks and fractures."

Alongside this, the patient might experience some of the more general signs of cancer.

Dr Sooj added: "Some of the more generic signs would be tiredness, weakness, weight loss and even fevers."

The NHS also warns that a noticeable lump over a bone or problems moving around, such as walking with a limp, are symptoms of the disease.

However, bone cancer is rare with around 550 new cases in the UK every year.

Therefore, your symptoms are more likely to be linked to something else.

"If you or your child are experiencing persistent, severe or worsening bone pain, visit your GP," the NHS adds.

"While it's highly unlikely to be the result of bone cancer, it does require further investigation."

Osteoporosis is a common condition among older adults, especially women. It is a degenerative bone disease that causes bones to become brittle and fragile over time, making them more prone to fractures. One way to prevent osteoporosis or manage its symptoms is by taking bone supplements.

Bone supplements are dietary supplements that contain nutrients that are essential for bone health, such as calcium, vitamin D, and magnesium. These supplements come in different forms, including tablets, capsules, and powders. However, not all bone supplements are created equal, and some may be more effective than others.

When it comes to finding the best bone supplement for osteoporosis, there are several factors to consider. First, it is important to choose a supplement that contains the right combination of nutrients in the right amounts. Calcium and vitamin D are the most important nutrients for bone health, but other minerals like magnesium and zinc are also important.

Second, it is important to choose a supplement that is easily absorbed by the body. Some forms of calcium, for example, are better absorbed than others. Calcium citrate is generally considered to be more easily absorbed than calcium carbonate.

Finally, it is important to choose a supplement that is safe and free from harmful additives. Some supplements may contain fillers, binders, or other ingredients that can be harmful to your health.

We spent hours researching and testing various bone supplements to identify the best one for osteoporosis. In the following sections, we will discuss the top bone supplements on the market and what makes them stand out.

    Buying Guide

When it comes to choosing the best bone supplement for osteoporosis, there are a few key factors that you should consider. By keeping these factors in mind, you can select a product that is safe, effective, and tailored to your specific needs.

First and foremost, it's important to look for a bone supplement that contains the right ingredients. Calcium and vitamin D are two of the most important nutrients for maintaining bone health, so you'll want to make sure that your supplement includes both of these. Additionally, many bone supplements contain other vitamins and minerals that can support bone health, such as magnesium, zinc, and vitamin K.

Another important factor to consider when selecting a bone supplement is the form in which it is available. Some supplements come in tablets or capsules, while others are available as powders or liquids. The form you choose will depend on your personal preferences and any dietary restrictions you may have.

It's also a good idea to consider the dosage of the supplement you choose. While it's important to get enough of the key nutrients, taking too much can be harmful. Make sure to follow the recommended dosage on the label of the supplement you choose.

Finally, it's important to consider the quality of the product you select. Look for a bone supplement that is made by a reputable manufacturer and has been independently tested for purity and potency. You may also want to consider reading reviews from other users to get an idea of how effective the product has been for others.

By keeping these factors in mind, you can select a bone supplement that will help support your bone health and reduce your risk of osteoporosis.
