What is cirrhosis of the liver? The final stage of liver disease is called cirrhosis. Cirrhosis is a chronic liver disease characterised by diffuse destruction and fibrotic regeneration of liver cells. As necrotic tissue gives way to fibrosis, this disease disrupts liver structure and normal vascularisation, impairs blood and lymphatic flow and ultimately causes liver failure.
